Around the age of two, Hezekiah was baptised on July 11, 1802 at the First Church of Saybrook at Saybrook Colony in Connecticut. He is buried next to his son, Alvin Case Kirtland. There is no tombstone or marker for Hezekiah. His parents were Daniel Kirtland and Lydia Lord. Hezekiah moved to Tarboro, Edgecombe County, NC and owned a sailing ship with a company, H.L. Kirtland Company. He and his men were slave runners and pirates to English ships. He was first married to Elizabeth "Eliza" Haywood McNair on July 3, 1823 at Edgecombe County, NC. Their daughters were: Mary Maria Haywood Kirtland and Susan Elizabeth Kirtland. A man named Henry Thomas Kirtland(to see a picture of his marker, go to findagrave.com, Hope Cemetery, Goodhue Co., MN) said during his lifetime that his mother died giving birth to him on the Atlantic Ocean. He said his parents were coming from England. He claimed that Hezekiah Kirtland placed him in an orphanage. It is highly possible that he was the son of Hezekiah and his wife, Eliza.
Hezekiah's company either went bankrupt or he gave it up in 1827. His father died in July of 1829 and his wife died four months later in November, 1829. It looks like he may have tried farming to support himself and his family. In 1832, his mother went to court and told the judge in Saybrook, Connecticut that the house her late husband owned could not be sold. It is not known how Hezekiah inherited the house unless his two older brothers turned it down. He married Sarah Louise Pittman, daughter of Dr. David Pittman and Charlotte Barnes of Edgecombe County, NC, on April 20, 1832 at Halifax County, NC., before moving back to Saybrook to the old home that had been in his family since 1708. After Sarah's first three children were born, Hezekiah sold the old family home and they moved to Peru, Huron County, Ohio. In the early 1860's, Hezekiah left Sarah and moved to Nashville, TN where sons, George and Alvin were living. After 34 years of marriage, Sarah divorced Hezekiah.
