By Consul Willshire Butterfield "Joseph Thompson and wife are engaged in a general millinery and fancy goods business in Brodhead. they were engaged in the same business at Albany, in this county, previous to coming to Brodhead. Mr Thompson was born in Canada in Dec 1833 of American parents. When a child he removed with his parents to Ohio and thence to Rockford, IL. He enlisted the first year of the War 18 Sept 1861...8th IL Vol. Cavalry...served three years in Army...discharged 28 Oct 1864...participated in many battles...Yorktown, Williamsburg..seven days fight and retreat of McClellan, second battle of Bull Run..Sout Mountain, Antietem and Chancellorsville where he had a horse shot out from under him and was taken prisoner..escapin g from his guard at midnight and reaching Union lines in safety...participated in twenty engagements including Gettysburg..after War ret'd to Rockford [IL]..then to Waterloo Iowa where he lived for two yrs..came to Albany 1868...Mrs Thompson [Charlotte Marson] b. Nottingham, England...came to US in 1847 with parents...settled at Rochester, NY...1854 removed to Ogle county, IL...took active part in women's work for the Union at Washington City under government commission

Ida married Herbert B. Oakes and Jessie married Alexander Walker [excerpts] :Joseph b. Port Hope, Ontario [s/o Henry and Sarah B. (Straw) Thompson who had five children: Henry, Joseph, Hannah, Alfred and ____ 2 living as of 1901; Joseph and Alfred. Henry's father was Henry Thompson of CT of Scottish heritage a soldier in american Revolution who d. Canada at age 86, faather of 5 children. Nathan Straw a native of NH was father of Sarah B. [I disagree as I think Sarah's father was Joseph and Nathan was her brother] He died in old age and had five children [as did Joseph],,,Joseph spent first seventeen years of life in Canada. Attended OBERLIN COLLEGE for a year and a half and then followed railroading for three years., In 1853 he came to Rockford, IL ...was a clerk in a grocery store and then a farmer until 1861...married 1861 to Charlotte Marson the d/o Samuel Marson; she was born in England...enlisted in Army Sept 1861 in 8th IL Vol Cavalry under John F. Farnsworth...discharged 1868...lived Waterloo, Iowa 1865-67 and then moved to Albany, WI and worked in a grist mill...1876 moved to Brodhead, WI in insurance business for many years and gave it up was a Justice
