WHITEHALL Eugene R. Bennett, 72, of Williams Street died Monday at his home.
Mr. Bennett was born in Ticonderoga.
He enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 15, 1941, and volunteered for PT boat duty. He received his training in Melville, R.I., and was sent to the South Pacific. He served on a PT boat with John F. Kennedy. He also was on PT boat 111 when it was sunk in the battle of Guadalcanal.
He also was involved in the battles of Savo Island, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, Bofainville and the Coral Sea. He was sent back to the United States and then to Europe for the Normandy invasion. His military awards included the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was promoted to chief petty officer and belonged to the Navy Reserve until 1951. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the American Legion Post 83 of Whitehall.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta LaMay Bennett; three sons, Duane Bennett of Dresden, and Garry and Charles Bennett, both of Argyle; six daughters, Janice Oliver of Dresden, Sue Mach, Cheryl Chapman and Loretta Cook, all of Whitehall, Donna Klein of Fort Ann and Corinne Bennett of Argyle; two sisters, Ester Russell and Ella Alund, both of Watervliet; a stepmother, Dorothy Bennett of Watervliet; four half-brothers, Richard Bennett of Latham, Gary Bennett and Ronald Bennett, both of Watervliet, and Lee Bennett of Rensselaer; six half-sisters, Carol Lemons, Helen Storm, Kay Childs, Joan Stiles, Sandy Bennett and Diane Dugan, all of Albany; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Jillson Funeral Home, 46 Williams St., Whitehall, and at 9:30 a.m. in the Notre Dame Des Victoires Church of Whitehall.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall.
Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
