WATERVLIET Philomena M. Iachetta Ostwald, 80, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Watervliet with her family at her side. Born in Colonie on December 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Mary Archer Iachetta. A lifelong resident of Watervliet, Philomena was a 1947 graduate of Watervliet High School. Philomena enjoyed working and worked at many places in her lifetime for the social rewards it brought her. She began her working career as an errand girl for local neighbors, then worked at Montgomery Ward, Cluett Peabody in the sewing room and as a cashier, Murph's Tavern in Watervliet, the Watervliet K of C where she was "the expert cake cutter" working with her husband Joe who was the banquet manager, the Times Union as a collection manager in the circulation department, the St. Joseph's Provincial House in the food service department, RPI in food and student health services, Sew & Sew Fabric Shop and Eileen's Bridal Shop and most recently for the Albany County Youth Bureau where she was a clerk but more importantly was known as "Aunt Phil" and a mother figure to many of her fellow workers who considered her the "Matriarch of the County Building" in downtown Albany. Philomena was an active member of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and School, troop leader of Girl Scout Troop 448, and volunteered at the Watervliet public and elementary school libraries, also assisting in refurbished books. Recently she volunteered at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish offices in Watervliet refurbishing and rebinding church record books. She also found great love in babysitting her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the wife of the late Joseph H. Ostwald Sr. who died in 1985; beloved mother of Barbara Ostwald (Lloyd Wulf) of Wellington, Colo. and their daughter, Rosemary Philomena Wulf; Mary Katherine Ostwald (Richard M. McDermott) of East Poestenkill and their daughter, Ailie McDermott; Rosemary Ostwald (Charles Frisbee) of Watervliet; Joseph H. Ostwald (Ann) of Portland, Maine and their daughters, Claire and Madeleine Ostwald; Patricia Ostwald (Donald Squier) of Copper Mountain, Colo.; and the late Marilyn Jean Ostwald who died in 1997; loving sister of Joseph (Doreen) Iachetta of Cohoes, Rose Murphy of Watervliet and Mary Anne (Charles "Skip") Kilcullen of Schenectady. Philomena was also survived by her special and dear friend, Ralph Nusca of Watervliet and several loving nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Regina Resta, Dr. Michael Wolfe, Community Hospice of Rensselaer and her special family friends are caregivers who loved and supported her. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Shrine Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated by Rev. L. Edward Deimeke and Rev. David Jones. Interment will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watervliet.
