Served in 1st New Hampshire (Stark's Regiment) in Revolutionary War; Cpl from Conn in Gen Washington's Life Guard. Served in military service of US for 9 yrs. In Battle of Bunker Hill, and In fight when Burgoyne was captured with rank of Sgt Maj. In both Battles of Stillwater, also in Battles of Monmouth and Hubbardton. Appl for pens Apr 12, 1818 while living in Truxton, Cortland, N.Y. (per DAR records)

Benjamin Cotton, grandfather of Wiseman Cotton, was an Englishman and a relative of the distinguished divine, John Cotton, who died in 1632. His son, Benjamin Cotton, was born in Boston, Mass, May 14, 1758. When but two years of age his parents died, when he was bound out, but from which bondage, when the war between the Colonies and Great Britian commenced he sought the opportunity to escape. He immediately entered the military service as a soldier of the United States, in which capacity he served nine years. He participated in the battle of Bunker Hill, and was in the fight when Burgoyne was captured. His rank was that of Sergeant-Major. Once he was shot through the neck by an Indian, another time through the leg. On one occasion he was left, with a companion, both of whom had the small-pox, to die in the woods. To the terrible malady his comrade succumbed. Mr Cotton barely escaping death from the disease and starvation. He emigrated to Milton Township in 1836, and died July 13, 1846. He was married to Dolly Smith in Wentworth, New Hampshire, in 1785. His wife died in March 1852. His family consisted of fourteen childrens: Hannah, Benjamin, Solomon, Dolly, Lydia, Abigail, Jonathan, George, David, Theodore, Wiseman, Elizabeth, Joseph, William. Four of whom, Jonathan, David, William and George Cotton, removed to Wayne County. [From History of Wayne County, Ohio by Douglas on page 637].

Benjamin Cotton, grandfather of Charles W., was born May 1, 1758, in Coos (now Grafton) county. New Hampshire. On October 12, 1785, he married, in Wentworth, NH., Dolly Smith, also a native of New Hampshire, burn April 3, 1706, and the names and dates of births of their children are as follows: Hannah, April 11, 1786,; Benjamin N., August 25, 1787; Solomon, February 11,1789; Dolly, September 24, 1790; Lydia, June 4, 1793; Abigal, March 22, 1795; Jonathan, December 8, 1796; George W., September 18, 1798; David, April 27, 1800; Theodore, September 24, 1802; "Wiseman, July 23, 1803; Elizabeth, June 13, 1805; Joseph, April 6, 1807; and William, November 18, 1810. About the year 1834 the grandparents of our subject came to Ohio, first settling in Medina county, and they died in Wayne county, each at the age of eighty-seven years; he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war.
