Bert Walter Nichols, Sr., 87, Carthage, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at his home with family members at his bedside.
Bert Walter Nichols, Sr. was born April 2, 1926 in Mercedes, Texas; a son of the late Bert Emory Nichols and Effie May (Banks) Nichols.
Bert was a U.S. Marine veteran serving during WWII in the Pacific theater.
He married Naomi Eve Card on June 28, 1946 in the Emanual Baptist Church, southeast of Carthage; she survives.
Bert owned and operated Bert's Garage and Wrecker Service, Carthage, for many years. He and his wife, Dr. Naomi Nichols were members of the First Baptist Church, Carthage. He was a member of the Carthage VFW, Carthage American Legion, the Carthage Masonic Lodge and the Carthage Shriners.
Additional survivors include, three sons; Bert Walter Nichols, Jr., Carthage, Harold Homer Nichols, wife, Hazel, Carthage and Charles Taylor Nichols, wife, Alisha, Sarcoxie, Mo.; four daughters; Alta May Smith, husband, Garrett, Carthage, Patricia Ann McClure, husband, Gene, Caney, Kan., Ruth Andrea West, husband, John, Carthage and Nancy Irene Rinehart, husband, Mark, Atlanta, Texas; one brother, Frank Homer Nichols, wife, Mae, LaRussell, Mo., and one sister, Emma Mary Straw, husband, Bud, Stotts City, Mo.; 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Bert was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Nichols, a grandson, Richard Emory Smith and a daughter-in-law, Johanna Marie (Atkinson) Nichols.
Masonic services will be held from6-6:30 p.m., followed by a visitation from6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at the First Baptist Church, Carthage. Rev. John Davidson, First Baptist Church, Carthage, will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
Memorial gifts are suggested to the CAN DO Senior Center, Carthage, MO. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO.
