He then accepted a captain's commission in the U. S. Corps of Topographical Engineers; was on Gen. Taylor's staff at the breaking out of the Mexican War, but failure of health obliged him to return North; was on the Coast Survey several years. During the late war he served on General Wool's staff at Fortress Monroe, afterwards stationed at Detroit, where he is now engaged on an important public improvement, the clearing of the St. Clair Flats for navigation; ranks as Major General - married Mary Boggs 1853 - Children, 1.
