TROY -- Carl J. 'Ozzie' Ostwald, 79, died peacefully Sunday, November 15, 1998, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Mark D. Schlesinger of Latham. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Frank and Katherine Hart Ostwald. He was a lifelong resident of Troy and attended Troy High School. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 to 1946 as a supply sergeant. Mr. Ostwald worked for the Norton Company and its predecessor Behr-Manning Company, in Watervliet, retiring after 46 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1489 in Wynantskill, the Troy-Norton Co. Retirees Association, United Papermakers Union. He was an avid bowler and golfer before his illness, and a former member of the Norton Co. bowling league, and a past president of Spring Little League. He also enjoyed his Thursday Night Poker Club and traveling to Atlantic City. Mr. Ostwald was a devoted father to his son, John Ostwald of Troy, and his duaghter, Mrs. Mark (Carla) Schlesinger of Latham. He is also survived by four sisters, Katherine Petruska and Dorothy Dorfner both of Troy, Bertha Hogan of Latham and Gertrude Debboli of Plainville, CT; two brothers, Leo Ostwald of Snyders Lake and Lawrence Ostwald of Saratoga Springs; two loving grandchildren, Crystal Marie Pascarella and Nicholas Ostwald, both of Troy, and his beloved friend Millie Flavin of Watervliet. He will be sadly missed by his son-in-law, Mark Schlesinger of Latham. Mr. Ostwald was predeceased by his five brothers, John, Frank, George Joseph and Gerald Ostwald. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday from the Bizzaro Funeral Home, 171 Hill Street, Troy, with his brother-in-law, Rev. Walter Debboli, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
