"He studied law, was admitted to the bar, opened an office in Bethel and secured a good practice. Early in the war of the rebellion, he entered the public service, was comissioned Captain of the 4th Maine Battery, afterwards the First Mounted Artillery; was at one time chief of Artillery, third Corps, and promoted Major.; was in active service nearly three years when ill health compelled him to return home to recruit, but without avail, and he died at the home of his father July 1864."

High principled and patriotic duty led him from the Forum to the Camp, and in the 3rd year of his service as Captain, Chief & Maj of Artillery in the Virginia Campaigns, he gave his life to his Country July 17, A.D. 1864, aged 40." "My patriot son fills an untimely grave."
