GORHAM - Beatrice Frances Sargent Straw, 96, passed away on June 5, 2014, at her home in Gorham. Bea was born on May 17, 1918, in Portland, the daughter of Harry and Charlotte (Dunning) Sargent. She was a graduate of Deering High School, class of 1936, and a graduate of Northeastern Business College. She worked at H.J. Heinz Co. for several years.
Bea married Mahlon R. Straw on June 13, 1942, and spent 54 years together until his death in 1996. Bea was a city girl. After she married she moved from Portland to Gorham to live on the Straw family farm. As she always said, she received quite an education on the farm. She was a housewife most of her life. She raised three children. Bea worked on the farm feeding the animals up until 2001. Bea was a member of the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church where she was a member of the ladies fellowship group. She helped on both the church and grange fairs. Bea and Mahlon were former deacons of the church. She was a 71 year member of the North Scarborough Grange, a member of the Cumberland Pomona, and the Maine State Grange and the National Grange. Bea held several offices over the years in North Scarborough Grange and the Cumberland Pomona including pianist, lecturer and CWA chairwoman. She was a former matron of North Scarborough Junior Grange. She enjoyed setting up the grange booths at the Cumberland Fair. Bea and Mahlon traveled the state with their installing team and thoroughly enjoyed installing the officers and visiting with fellow grangers. Bea cooked countless pies for both the church and grange suppers.
She was a past Pomona, Past Junior Deputy, and former junior director of the Maine State Grange. Bea and Mahlon directed the rose drill team for the state grange for several years. They received may compliments on how well the rose drill was performed. They also received the Maine State Grange Farm Family Award in 1976. She served on the Educational Aid Committee for 17 years. Bea was an active member of the Windham / White Rock Extension and former Westbrook Extension Group. She was an excellent cook.
She was known for her Lemon Meringue pies and also her custard pies. Bea enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She would can vegetables and make homemade relish. Bea loved to sew and made clothes for her daughters when they were young. She made quilts for many of her relatives. Bea also loved to knit having made many sweaters, afghans, socks, hats and mittens. She also enjoyed embroidery and loved animals and found joy in taking care of them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mahlon in November, 1996; and her daughter, Kathleen Robbins in July, 1999.
She is survived by her son, Kevin Straw and his wife Linda, and her daughter, Cheryl Walls and her husband Gary all of Gorham. She is also survived by a sister, Pauline Carson of Savannah, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Mary Elwell of Bar Mills; six grandchildren, Darren Walls of North Waterboro, Karen Straw and her partner Eric Bordeau of Gorham, Kristen Wood and her husband Jason of Hollis, Bethany Cousino and her husband Brian of Gorham and Emily and Jesse Robbins. She is also survived four great-grandsons, Eric, Jamie and Hunter Walls, and Benjamin Bordeau; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham on Monday, June 9, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. A Grange service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the chapel on Tuesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. Private burial will follow in the South Gorham Cemetery, Gorham.
