The War Was Very Real to Young Girl( by Zeta Freeman)
Cappers Weekly February 9, 1985
"I was only 11 years old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, but the war was very real to me. Airplanes flew over our place daily. Some were in training and others were transfering. As we worked in the fields, we would stop to count the planes. Our cousins, uncles and neighbor's sons had all gone to war. Some were injured, some never came home, and several came home with their minds scarred forever or physically disabled. I wondered at night if it would ever end and sometimes I had bad dreams.
On the morning of August 14, 1945, Daddy had gone up to Grandpa's to get our mail. When he came home, he brought the news of the Japanese surrender. Mama cried, her youngest brother was in the South Pacific. I was only 15 years old then, but the war had made an impression on my life.
Daddy unharnessed the horses and turned them out to pasture. We did not work that day. Mama cooked a "Sunday dinner." She opened our last jar of canned beef which she had been saving for "special." After dinner, we walked across the river to the channel and went swimming. This was the way we celebrated the end of the War."
