Joseph Anthony Greene and family...
Elsie (Flynn) and Joseph Henry Greene moved their family from Harbour Island to Mt. Arlington Heights in the 1950's. Joseph and his son, Joseph Jr. built their new two story home on top of a hill overlooking beautiful Mt. Arlington Heights aka "Da Cove". Elsie and Joe had ten children and this is the story of their 2nd eldest son, Joseph Anthony Jr. (Joe) and his family.... J
Joe's story...
Joe was born on August 20th, 1934 in a small place called Harbour Island in Placentia Bay and like the rest of his siblings, worked hard to make a living for his family. Joe finished school at a very young age and worked with his father fishing... A few years later Joe and his older brother Cecil went on to build houses in St. John's and were known to the contracting world as the Greene Brothers. In their spare time, one of their favorite past times was playing guitar and accordion, all his siblings loved to get together and play music and have a sing along with family and friends..."Happy Days" was one of Joe's many favorite sayings J
In October 1958 Joe married Mary Gambin, daughter of Cornelius and Selina Gambin. Mary's mom Selina died at a very young age of 23 on April 12th 1936, Mary was not even a year old when she moved in with and was raised by two beautiful people, Nora Parsons and her husband. Mary's dad Cornelius later met and married a beautiful lady named Florence and they had 7 children of their own and lived in Jerseyside, Placentia... Cornelius passed in 1987 at the age of 81 and Florence passed in 2002 at the age of 84. L
Joe and Mary had their first child, a daughter they named Concepta Maria who was born on May 3rd, 1959. Later that year Joe, Mary and their daughter Connie moved to Montreal where Joe worked as a carpenter for a year or more and then, in 1961 they moved back to Mount Arlington Heights and built a house next door to his parent's and across the road from his older brother Cecil, his wife Mary and their family. Surrounded by a large circle of family, Joe and Mary anxiously moved in well before their house was finished and on September 27th, 1961, their first son Derrick was born, a year later Sherry Selina was born on November 25th, 1962. Next in line was Joseph, he was born December 26th, 1963 at Joe and Mary's home by the community mid-wife and in the middle of a snowstorm... then June 30th, 1965 Carmel Mary was born, or as her dad often called her "Goldey Locks" or "Locks of Gold". Then Rodney Cornelius, aka "son son" was born June 3rd, 1967. J
Joe worked fulltime job at the new phosphorus plant in Long Harbour called ERCO Industries, Albright and Wilson Company from England...the company broke ground in 1966, the beginning of a new found wealth for some... environmentally devastating and unhealthy to all who worked there and many who lived nearby...that's another story for another time.
In 1969 or 1970... Mary was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and on January 23rd 1971, their mom, Joe`s wife passed away ... a beautiful young woman loved by all who knew her... many hearts broken and lives changed forever... L Joe was over whelmed with grief, heartbroken and worried about the children...what is he going to do... the future looked heavy and sad but never underestimate a strong man when he is down. Joe had it tough financially at times but thankful to be working, even if it was at unhealthy ERCO, he maintained the home and took care of his children as best he could; the children loved him very much and certainly missed their mom. Overtime the healing helps and a year or so later he meets Gladys.
Life goes on and Joe meets a special lady from Dunville...
Joe's sister introduced him to a lady from Dunville, Gladys Hoben born October 30th, 1936. Gladys had seven children, two sons Ernest and Donald, and five daughters, Barbara, Marilyn, Mary, Brenda and Deborah; Barbara died when she was just 6 months old and their father and Gladys' husband William Hoben also lost his battle with cancer in December 1971... Joe, Gladys and their children had a lot in common...in 1973 they got engaged but did not get married until many years later.
In the late 1970's Joe decided it was time to make a lifelong dream of his become a reality, to build a boat, a Long Liner in fact, right there on his property in da coveJ. Over the next couple of years and with the assistance of his middle son whose name was also Joe, his dream did indeed became a reality. Then one day, on a beautiful summer Saturday morning in 1981, it was time for the launch. Joe and Joe Jr. began preparations for the massive move and Gladys and the kids began the preparations for the celebration to follow...the excitement was evident as members of the community gathered to watch and help where they could...Joe and Joe Jr. were so proud and excited that day J...as were all his family. With careful planning and some minor adjustments they were ready to hook up to Donny Murphy's truck and with Donny behind the wheel and Joe and Joe Jr. along side, they started to move...
Everyone who had gathered walked behind as Donny, with the assistance of Joe and Joe Jr. slowly and expertly guided this huge boat, a Long Liner she wasJ, the short distance through the narrow and winding road leading to the Government Wharf for its launch. It took a few hours to get there but they made it, the long liner was launched and christened "The Gladys and Mary"... Joe's dream has finally become a realityJ Over the years "The Gladys and Mary" sailed the shores of Placentia Bay as a pleasure boat and was enjoyed by family and friends, fishing and visiting the unforgettable homes and communities where they once lived and grew up such as Harbour Island and Meersheen Island, homes and communities that were once alive with activity and life now ghost towns only to be remembered...
After living apart for many years and when the children were much older and finished school, Joe and Gladys married in June 1982. They bought, renovated and moved into Joe's parent's house next door and over time, Joe dismantled the old house. Many years later, in 2009, Joe's oldest son Derrick would become the owner of the property in which he grew up on, he cleared the land and had planned to put a retirement home there but passed away in 2013 with Pancreatic Cancer before that dream could become a reality... L Joe's middle son Joe Jr. inherited the other house where he currently is living today.
Joe took an early retirement when ERCO closed down operations in 1989... Joe and Gladys both adjusted as you would and travelled around the province every year with their camper trailer in tow and enjoyed life and good times with family and friends. J These happy occasions were sometimes interrupted though...at a very young age, Gladys was diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis which is very painful to the bones and joints and can do a lot of damage to the body over the years and several times throughout Gladys 'life she had to have joint replacement surgery ... sometimes Joe would fondly refer to Gladys as the bionic womanJ.
Joe developed Alzheimer's in the mid 1990`s and for the next number of years was fighting its presence until that right was taken away from him... in January 2003 Joe's oldest daughter Connie was in hospital having surgery, his other children lived many miles away, while Sherry and her brother Joe had to do the hardest thing ever asked of them in their entire life... with Gladys by their side, they had to drive their dad to the Lions Manor nursing home in Placentia where Joe would live out the remainder of his days...he slowly slip further away and on August 22nd 2005 Joe peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family... once again their hearts were broken and their lives changed forever...L
Gladys continued to live in their home for another couple of years but in 2007, her medical condition soon convinced her to move and live in a smaller more manageable place in Placentia, closer to her doctor and family as she required more assistance and support as she got older. Gladys' other children and step children would visit as often as possible over the next few years and in July 2012, Gladys passed peacefully away in Placentia hospital surrounded by her loving family, once again their hearts were broken and their lives changed forever. L
Listen `til I tells ye... a story remembered and told by Joe's middle daughter Sherry... that's me J!!
I hope this story brings a smile and fond memories to everyone who knew and loved dad ... to all my siblings, step-siblings and half-siblings, (I love you allJ) please take this story and create your own treasury of memories and continue your own story and pass it on to your children and so on, hopefully for many years and many generations to come....
I will never forget you Dad, love and miss you everyday...xo Sherry
