Oscar Albert Straw passed away on 13 Dec 2009 at the age of 92. He was born in the village of Mountain Mills in Wilmington, Vermont, the son of Alston A. amd Eudora B. (Carter) Straw. He had resided in Weare since 1945. He attended the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences and spent many hours painting and working with clay. Oscar wqorked as an attendant at the New Hampshire State Hospital, as a custodian of Weare Schools and at Hitchner Manufacturing of Milford. a veteran of WWII, he served with the US Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post NO. 65 of Weare. Family members include his wife of 58 yrs, Elizabeth W. Purington of Weare; a son Wm A. Straw of Weare, and his wife Eliza; a daughter Alcie S. Thompson, and her husband Wayne, all of Weare; four granchildren and five great grandchildren. the members of the Historical Society will fondly remember Oscar playing the piano while we were cleaning upa fter our programs at the Town Hall. He was born in Mountain Mills in Wilmington, Vt., to Alston A. and Eudora B. (Carter) Straw. He graduated from Lexington (Mass.) High School in 1936 and attended the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He lived in Weare since 1945. He was employed as an attendant at the New Hampshire State Hospital, custodian of Weare Schools and with Hitchner Manufacturing of Milford.
He enjoyed participating in theater, music, painting, reading, sculpting, watching baseball, boxing, science and historical documentaries and old movies.
He was a member of American Legion Post 65 of Weare, the former Congregational Church of Weare, Weare Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers), and Weare and New Hampshire historical societies.
Members of his family include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth W. Purington of Weare; two children, William A. Straw and Alice S. Thomson, both of Weare; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
SERVICES: A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery.
