Foster, Joseph J. III RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. Joseph J. Foster III was born May 1, 1930 to Mary Adele Galvin and Joseph J. Foster in Albany, N.Y. He died on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from com-plications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at Bright Gardens, Rancho Mirage. He was the oldest of four children. His sister, Irene Dougherty and brother, Arthur Foster have already passed. In 1948, he graduated from the Vincentian Institute High School in Albany and in 1950, he received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology at Fort Wayne, Ind. In January 1951, he volunteered for the United States Air Force and served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio where he was promoted to sergeant in December 1951. In June 1952, he received a direct commission as a second lieutenant and became an Air Force pilot in January 1954. He and his first wife (Ruth M. Burneka) were married in January 1953. Together they raised seven children, Joseph, Michael, Jerry, Mary Katherine, Mark, Ann Marie, and Gregory. The family had 16 stateside assignments and a two-and-a-half year tour at Tachikawa Air Base in Japan. During 1963-1966, he flew the Douglas C-133 "Cargomaster" worldwide to 40 different countries. He volunteered for Vietnam and flew 1,165 combat sorties as an air commando pilot. He logged 5,750 hours in the air in 19 different types of prop/turbo-prop/jet aircraft during his pilot career. In addition, he helped develop the Titan 1 and Titan 11 ICBMs, the F-15 and F-16 fighters and the C-5A transport. His combat decorations include two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star, five Air Medals, and two Meritorious Service Medals. After retiring from the Air Force in 1979, he worked in project management positions at Douglas on the "C-X" transport proposal, Northrop Electronics on the "M-X" ICBM, Rockwell International on the "B-1B" Bomber and Douglas/Boeing on the "C-17" "Globemaster 111" transport. He retired in August 1971 after working in the military and civilian aerospace world for 52 years. His first wife, Ruth died in 1991. He subsequently married Dorothy C. Petersen at the Naval Chapel at Long Beach, Calif. Between them they have nine children, 18 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Once retired from Boeing in 2001, he became very active in the Palm Springs MOAA, the Palm Springs Air Museum, and Old Bold Pilots. In 2007, he was inducted into the "Hall of Fame" at both the Palm Springs Air Museum and the Indiana Institute of Technology. Visitation will be held at the Ramon Chapel, Forest Lawn Cathedral City from 5 to 9 p.m. with the "Rosary" service commencing at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 3. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert.
