SARASOTA, Fla. '96 Philip Arthur Straw, 85, died Jan. 8, 2002, in Sarasota. He was born May 3, 1916, in Worcester, Vt., the son of Clarence C. and Edith (Damon) Straw. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a B-24 gunner holding the rank of staff sergeant. He served as a gunnery instructor after returning from Europe. Mr. Straw moved to Maryland in 1951, where he managed agricultural operations and was manager of the River Road Country Club in Poolesville, Md., which he helped to build. He moved to Sarasota in 1970, where he managed the Driftwood Motel and El Verona Motel until he retired in 1981. Survivors include his wife, Elnora (LaRose) Straw; a daughter, Susan Straw Greenman of Savannah, Ga.; a son, Peter Straw of Sarasota; a sister, Bernice Young of Montpelier, Vt.; a brother, Warren Straw of Poultney, Vt.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial services with military honors will be held May 3 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.

SERVED AS A 50 CALIBER MACHINE-GUNNER ON A B-25 BOMBER STATIONED IN NORTH AFRICA. WAS ON THE BOMBING RUNS OVER PLOESTI OIL FIELD REFINERIES. ALSO AN INSTRUCTOR IN GUNNERY SCHOOL.

Philip married Elnora Mildred LaRose, daughter of Howard Henry LaRose and Irene Selinda Lewis, on 23 Dec 1940 in Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont. (Elnora Mildred LaRose was born on 25 Jan 1922 in Hinesburg, Chittenden County, Vermont, died on 3 Sep 2016 in Georgia and was buried in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida.)
