SARASOTA, Fla. '96 Philip Arthur Straw, 85, died Jan. 8, 2002, in Sarasota. He was born May 3, 1916, in Worcester, Vt., the son of Clarence C. and Edith (Damon) Straw. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a B-24 gunner holding the rank of staff sergeant. He served as a gunnery instructor after returning from Europe. Mr. Straw moved to Maryland in 1951, where he managed agricultural operations and was manager of the River Road Country Club in Poolesville, Md., which he helped to build. He moved to Sarasota in 1970, where he managed the Driftwood Motel and El Verona Motel until he retired in 1981. Survivors include his wife, Elnora (LaRose) Straw; a daughter, Susan Straw Greenman of Savannah, Ga.; a son, Peter Straw of Sarasota; a sister, Bernice Young of Montpelier, Vt.; a brother, Warren Straw of Poultney, Vt.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial services with military honors will be held May 3 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.
