DEATH OF HUGH K. MOORE
The death of Hugh Kelsea Moore, which has been previously announced in our columns, removes from Malden one of its best-known citizens, who has been identified with it for upwards of forty-three years. He was born in Pembroke, N.H., Aug. 12, 1815, and died at his home in the city on the 20th inst., having reached the age of 77 years, 8 months, and 8 days. He was of Scotch Irish descent, being a great grandson of deacon James Moore, one of the first settlers of Pembroke, upon whom a tract of land was conferred in recognition of his military service under the famous Capt. Lovewell, and great great grandson of Rev. Robert Mitchell, the first Presbyterian minister of the same town. He was also grand nephew of Capt. Daniel Moore, who commanded the right flank company of Col. Stark's regiment at the battle of Bunker Hill. He removed to Boston when quite a young man, and took up his residence in Malden in 1849, where he built the house on the corner of Pearl and Pleasant streets, which he occupied at the time of his death. He was a member of Tremont Lodge, I. O. O. F. of Boston, of which organization he was a Past Grand, also of Hugh de Payend's Commandery and of Waverly Royal Arch Chapter, F. A. M., of Melrose, and of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics' Association, and the Veteran Firemen's Association of Boston. He was at one time a member of the "Boston Tigers," and held for some years a commission in the Washington Light Guard, First Regiment, M. V. M. He was also connected with military organizations in Malden and Lowell. In 1852, he founded the American Steam Gauge Co. of Boston, of which organization he was superintendent, a position which he held until his death. Two employees of this corporation are still living who learned their trade under him, and have worked for him continuously for forty-four years. In his younger days, he gave considerable attention to music. He was a member of several musical societies of Boston, and at one time sang tenor in Dr. Parkman's church. He was twice chorister of the Baptist church in Malden, for which he organized and led a quartet and church choir. Four of his children are still living, viz. Rev. Albert W. Moore, pastor of the Central Congregational Church, Lynn, Mass., C. C. L. and G. Fred Moore, of this city, and Mrs. Ella S. M. Hawley, wife of Lieut. John M. Hawley, U. S. N., now stationed at Annapolis Naval Academy. Another son, Frank K. Moore, paymaster in the navy, died in this city fifteen years ago.The funeral services will be held at the late residence of the deceased, Thursday at 2 P. M. Interment at the family lot in Salem street cemetery.
