The Dallas Morning News
January 6, 1989
..."First you should know that Clark Straw, Dallas-area general manager of Hewlett-Packard Co., invites all of you to see a prototype of the Stars & Stripes -- the lightning fast catamaran -- that whupped the huge, radically designed New Zealand in last year's America's Cup competition.".....".Hewlett-Packard computers produce some of the best yacht designs in the world...."

San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA)
November 25, 1999
"It was absolutely fantastic, a tremendous thrill," said Clark Straw of La Jolla. Straw, who has arranged several corporate sponsorships for Conner's America's Cup syndicate over the years, was invited aboard Stars & Stripes as the 17th man during a race off Auckland a couple of weeks ago.
"But I don't know if I'd pay the 75 grand personally.".......The 17th man's job is to do exactly nothing, except avoid falling overboard during the two- to three-hour sail.
"There are no handholds, and the deck was pretty slippery -- there was a mist that morning. These boats are unbelievably fast and the stern really bounces around in 18- to 20-knot winds," said Straw, who has a 54-foot sailboat of his own.
"I just kept telling myself, 'Don't fall off!' We got into a real tacking duel with the French boat, back and forth, back and forth. I was using a lot of muscles just to hold on, and I can't believe how sore I was the next day......Straw said he learned after his race just how highly the real sailors regard their honorary crew member.
"It turns out the name of the 17th man goes onto the stern of Stars & Stripes after the race.".......
