VERSHIRE'97 Everett F. Straw, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction.
He was born April 1, 1922, in Vershire, the son of Frederick and Edith (Lake) Straw. He attended school in Vershire and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 in Germany during World War II.
On May 3, 1942, he married Bertha R. Hodge. They lived all their married life in Vershire. She died Aug. 31, 1993.
He was a lifetime resident of Vershire, working on his family's farm and later for Don Orr of Vershire, before serving as the town road commissioner for many years. Most recently, he did roadside mowing for the State of Vermont.
He enjoyed maple sugaring, mowing, a good game of cards and watching his favorite NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon. He loved to watch horse pulling at the local fairs.
Survivors include a step-daughter, Evelyn Towle of Vershire; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife; a brother, Walter Straw; and two sisters, Evelyn Straw Griffin and Avis Straw.
There are no public calling hours. A graveside funeral service will be held later this spring at the Post Mills Cemetery in Post Mills.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea, is in charge of arrangements.
