Genevieve Newton Strow, 95, the matriarch of the Newton family, was born at the family ranch in Cody on March 18, 1920, the youngest of seven children born to E. E. Newton and Eliza Collins Bushnell Newton.
She was the granddaughter of S. S. Newton and Eliza Stratton Newton, and with her passing on Feb. 11, 2016, the last surviving member of her generation.
The Newton family members started arriving, some via the Texas cattle drive, into Montana and Wyoming before either had become states. Three sons and one daughter of S.S. and Eliza Stratton Newton, all known by their initials, J.W., A.C., E.E. Newton and S.D. (Sarah Darlene) Newton Ingraham established or bought ranches in both states; J.W. and A.C., the Marquette Ranch on the Southfork of the Shoshone River, A.C., the Trail Creek Ranch on Trail Creek, E.E. and S.D., the Springdale Ranch (now the Moon Crest Ranch) on Rattlesnake Creek, and J.W. in the Bull Mountains of Roundup, Mont.
Genevieve's married life might never have started had not Sheriff Frank Blackburn locked up her future husband, Clifton Strow, who E.E. Newton threatened to shoot, so the family myth goes, for wanting to court his daughter. Clifton had come to the Cody area from the Sweetwater country of Wyoming. He was a rodeo saddle bronc rider and suspected whisky runner among other things.
As things eventually worked out, they ran away and were married in Red Lodge, Mont., on April 23, 1938. That bond held for 70 years until Clifton's death in 2008. From this marriage three sons were born, Richard Earle, Fred Newton and Larry Gene; from those were born three grandsons and a granddaughter.
Her life was not always easy as life had its sorrows, yet there were many rewarding times that gave her great joy and contentment and sustained her through almost 96 years.
Her wonderful friends and beloved sister, Ester Newton Russell, though now departed, were treasured memories for her that were often repeated in her later years.
She appreciated the kindness of others, whether the sweetness of a smile or the opportunity to visit. Her character was one of kindness for others and the strength to accept others as they were without criticism.
The Newton family gatherings, on the last Sunday of July each year, were always looked forward to with the anticipation of seeing family members and swapping tales that may have seemed greater than she remembered. As she said, "a varnished tale always looks shinier," (and sometimes more interesting!).
Her many years as a Rebekah Lodge member gave her great friends and appreciation for all that they have given back to her.
Mother died in peace at home surrounded by loving souls wishing her well on her last journey in the area she loved.
Memorial services will be held at the 2016 Newton Family reunion in July at the Nearby Ranch. Her ashes will be interred in Riverside Cemetery next to her husband Clifton.
