0bit~Mrs. Caroline Shuey Straw, was born March 1, 1836, and died at her home near Independence, April 18, being 81 years, 1 month and 6 days old. She was married to Samuel Reed in 1855. He died, leaving her a widow in 1865. (He died in the Civil War.) To this union were born four children, three of whom died in infancy. The fourth, Mrs. Charles Mohring, of Independnce, still survives. May 27, 1869, she was again married to John Soloman Straw. To them were born five children-Mrs. Sarah Turis, of Ward, South Dakota; Mrs. Lillie Butterfield, of Troy Mills; Delmar, John and Mrs. Mabel Peterson, all of Independence, who were with her to the last. Her husband, Soloman Straw, passed away September 21, 1900. She was grandmother of forty-four grandchildren and twenty great-great-grandchildren. She always believed in the Christian life and was a loving mother, always liked and esteemed in her neighborhood, and had not an enemy. Her body was brought to the Hoover Wesleyan Methodist Church in south Buchanan County, 16 miles southeast of Indpendence, and laid to rest in the beautiful Circle Grove Cemetery, adjoining the church, beside the body of her husband, Soloman Straw, who was buried there in 1900. A number of her children and grandchildren were present and neighbors of the Hoover community who had known her when she used to live near the church. The funeral sermon was preached by the writer, Rev. J. F. Hiner, pastor of the Hoover Wesleyan Church. Devotions led by the Rev. G. C. Houck, of Independence, a friend of the deceased and relatives. Text used was Genesis, 18th chapter and the latter part of the 25th verse, Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?" The Hoover church and community extend to the bereaved relatives and children their prayers and sympathy.

Caroline married John Solomon Straw. (John Solomon Straw was born on 10 Apr 1814 in Pennsylvania, died on 21 Sep 1899 and was buried in Circle Grove Cemetery in Quasqueton, Buchanan County, Iowa.)
