John M. Kennish: Born on the Isle of Man, November 11, 1857; died at Kansas City, Missouri, September 14, 1921. He came to Missouri early in life and was graduated from the University of Missouri in 1884. The following year he began the practice of law at Mound City, with an appointment as city attorney. Later he served as prosecuting attorney for Holt county. He was State Senator from the first Missouri district and later became assistant Attorney-General. His next appointment was to the office of State Insurance Commissioner [1909]. Upon the death of Judge Fox of the Missouri Supreme Court in 1910, he was appointed by Governor Hadley to fill the vacancy and was then elected to the office in November, 1910. After his term as Supreme Judge expired he served a few months as superintendent of insurance, but resigned to open a law office in Kansas City.

Add'l information : came with his parents Rev and Mrs Wm Kennis and eleven sisters and brothers to Holt County in 1870. Attended rural school in Liberty district..college in Abringdon, IL...admitted tio BAr 1885...was associated wtih Judge D. W. Porter in Mound City.
1888- elected prosecuting attorney..1892 - elected State Senator; 1896 married Miss Nellie Offult of Kansas City, KS; 1904 - selected by Gov. Hadley as his 1st assistant; 1909...was one of the original members of the State Public Service Commission. the appointment was made by Gov Major in 1913...1920 was reappointed by Gov Gardner...He resigned form this office to become Master of Chancery of Kansas City Railway.Receivership [monthly salary of $666.00], appoinated by Judge Stone of US Supreme Cout. On Sep 14 1921 Judge Kennish and Judge Goodrich had lunch together, retruned to the Commerce building. As they separated Judge Kennish fell and died within a few minutes.....

Four days before his death Judge John Kennish made a Will. His widow Mrs. Nellie M. Kennish will reeive half the property outright...raminder to remain in trust, the income going to Mrs Kennish....a neice will receive $25.00 a month from the income. Mrs Kennish and Wm E. Bissett, a nephew, are named executors

Death came at entrance to the Commerce Building
Judge Kennish and Judge Goodrich had been at the Mid-Day Club and were leaving the building.
Judge John Kennish died suddenly thi afternoon at the Walnut St entrance of the Commerce Trust Company.Judge James Goodrich was with Judge Kennish. They were at luncheon together at the Mid-Day Club on the fourteenth floor of the Commeerce Building and had just left the building entrance when Judge Kennish fell. John Wilson, police commissioner, a personal friend, was passing in his motor car when Judge Kennish fell. Mr wilsona nd other friends took the body to Stine and McClure's in Wilson's car.
Docot H. E. Moss, Deputy Coroner, went to S. & McC's to hold a post mortem...cause of death not determined...
Judge Kennish born on the Isle of Man..came to US in childhood...began practice of law in Holt Co. ..represented his district in the State Senate..1896 drafted as Repiblican candidate for Att'y General at that time the whole State Republican ticket was defeated...1910 appointed by Gov Hadley to fill vacancy left by death of Judge James D. Fox on supreme bench...serving three years..appointed chief assistant to Atty'General Hadley and served four years...served few monts as Superintendent of Insurance..resigned...opened law ofc in Kansas City [MO]...appointed as member of state public servcie commission..resigned last No to accept appointment of master in chancery in K. C. railways receivership

Missouri Death Certificate No. 3145: John KENNISH, born 11 Nov 1857, Isle of Man; died 14 Sep 1921, Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. John was an attorney, and the husband of Nellie KENNISH. He was also the son of William KENNISH and ..... CALLOW (both of Isle of Man). He was 63 years, 10 months, and 3 days of age when he died from acute dilation of the heart, with chronic interstitial nephritis. The informant listed was Mrs. Nellie KENNISH, 3218 Saint John Avenue. John was buried at Mound City, Holt, Missouri, on 16 Sep 1921, by Stine and McClure, 924 Oak.
