R. J Power researcher - Philip Power, father of Thomas, went to Oderin from Burin about 1840, with his mother (née Sheehan) and his brother Patrick. Their father, also named Philip, had died a few years earlier and their mother was remarried to a Mr. Fogarthy.
First generation immigrant from Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Carrick-on-Suir is 30 km up-river from the port of Waterford, Philip's likely point of embarcation, and borders on County Waterford.
Family tradition is that he came to Newfoundland in 1811 with two brothers and a sister, all of whom settled in Placentia Bay. Philip himself first settled in Burin, on the western side of the bay.
