A Lehigh man was killed when the driver of a pickup truck he was riding in lost control of the vehicle Tuesday night in Lehigh. Darwin Reverts, 41, was pronounced dead on the scene near the Des Moines River bridge in Lehigh. The driver of the truck, Paul Abbott, 21, lost control of the Ford F-150 he was driving on Pleasant Street in Lehigh and collided with a tree, according to the Iowa State Patrol. "It was pretty much instant," said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Randy Steinkamp. Abbott walked to a nearby home to call for help after calling his grandmother on a cell phone. The woman called 911 to report the accident describing the location as near the Lehigh Bridge. The Lehigh Fire Department and Dayton Rescue were dispatched to the scene but were initially unable to find the accident. The crash occurred on a dead-end road that veers south off the main road into Lehigh. Authorities found the accident after someone from the house the driver walked to called 911 at about 10:15 p.m. Abbott was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center and later taken by air ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Steinkamp said speed and alcohol may have contributed to the accident. Troopers took a blood sample that was sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation lab in Ankeny Wednesday. No charges have been filed in the crash pending test results, Steinkamp said.

Darwin Reverts was born to Delmer and Jacquelyn (Straw) Reverts on April 18, 1966 in Pipestone, Minnesota. In his early years, he lived in several locations with his family in southwest Minnesota. When he was seven years old, he moved with his family to Jasper, Minnesota where he was raised and attended school. After his graduation from Jasper High School, he began working at Ellefson Meats in Pipestone. He was later employed at Swift Meat Packing in Worthington, Minnesota. He then moved to Clear Lake, South Dakota where he lived for a short time before moving to Webster City, Iowa. While living in Webster City, he worked as a carpenter. Following a scaffolding accident, he was disabled and could no longer work. Recently, he moved to Lehigh, Iowa where he currently resided. On Tuesday evening, November 13, 2007, he was traveling with a friend near Lehigh when he was in a motor vehicle accident and died at the age of 41 years, six months and 25 days.
Darwin loved cars and motorcycles and working on them. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Whatever he did, he did to perfection. He had a great love for people, and he was always there to help his friends.
He is lovingly remembered by his two children, Marcus S. Chapin of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Shawn Lee Reverts of Wellsburg, Iowa; his mother, Jacquelyn Reverts of Jasper, Minnesota; five brothers, Dennis Neuman and Susan Johanknecht of Sibley, Iowa, Regge and his wife Donna Neuman of Jackson, Minnesota, and Robert and his wife Mary Neuman of Benson, Minnesota, William Reverts of Madison, South Dakota and Daryl and Kim Reverts of Humboldt, South Dakota; and three sisters, Debra and her husband Arnold Brondsema of Beaver Creek, Minnesota, Jolene Crane of Rock Rapids, Iowa and Christina and Kim Reverts of Humbolt, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his father, Delmer; one brother, Delvin Reverts; and two nephews, Jacob Neuman and James Neuman.
