James married Sarah Straw, daughter of Deacon David Straw and Mary Cady, on 17 Jan 1820 in Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont. (Sarah Straw was born in 1805 in Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont, died in Shabbona, DeKalb county, Illinois and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock, Iowa.)
