-From Vera Bunger notes
I am seeking information on Elizabeth Mansfield. She was listed in the 1850 federal census in Wyandot Co Richland twp. Her children: Amelia age 11 and Alison George age 1. We believe that the father of her children, Israel Straw, left her between 1850 and 1855. She is said to be the Indian Princess, "Laughing Water" of the Wyandot Tribe. Also believed to be the daughter of Rev Grey Eyes who went on to Wyandotte, KS. I am seeking ANY information anyone might have on what happened to her
I am finding some conficting information on Israel Straw. I am just starting my search on the Straw's. I have seen the note posted on Elizabeth Mansfield 23 Sep 2000. I have no information on her. Family stories have it that one of the Straw grandmothers was Native American. My Greatgrandfather
was Josephus J. Straw. His father was Josephus Straw who married Elizabeth Stansberry. His father believed to be Israel Straw born 22 Nov. 1798 Waterbury, Washington, VT with children Priscilla born 1825, Josephus born 1826, Daniel born 1833, Jesse born 1837. Wife listed as Sarah Smith with all other info. unknown. Could these two Israel's be connected or from different lines. If you have any information on Israel Straw please let me know. With the dates of the births of Israel children that he may be one in the same.

My father has been tracing our family history for years and this is what we have on Allison, son of Israel and Princess Laughing Water (on the Princess we have yet to find her American name)We have hand written message from Israel's daughter from his first marriage to Sarah Smith whom he had four children with, all born in Upper Sandusky, OH. We do not know if he skipped out on Sarah or if she died or where he went with the princess; only that he left his children with her here in OH.
Allison had a sister Millie, who married a Hagerman and we don't know where she went either but we are sending for death certificates.
Allison did marry Huldah Clark and they are both buried in the Ohio City Cemetery in OH. I live about 10 mins away and have seen them myself. They had 6 children:
Walter b. 15 Aug 1878 and died 23 Oct 1938 and married Mary Ella Ball
George Franklin b. 28 Oct 1972; died 1958; bur Ohio City Cem
Clara Blanche b. 1874' died 1966
Loren Russell b. 24 Dec 1876 and died 28 Nov 1919 (my greatgreatgrandfather)
Infant male that died in childbirth
Lee Shimer (adopted son)
I do not know who George F. married for sure (we have Emma Bowers) with three children:
Clarence McKinley b. 11 Dec 1895; d. 7 Oct 1900; bur Ohio City Cem
Mildred b. 9 Sept 1906 and died 27 Dec 1911
Alvin b. 1908? and died 28 Nov 1967; lived in Holland, OH and bur Lucas Co. OH

After numerous weeks of research I have found the following:
Joel and Mary Straw did have a son George b. in 1844(confirmed by the 1850 and 1860 OH census); however he did not marry Huldah Clark. Alison George Straw was born Jan 1, 1849. He is the son of Israel Straw and Elizabeth Mansfield (aka "Laughing Water"). A copy of Alison's death certificate (registration district #1291 Primary registration district #8525 registered #154) list his parents as Israel Straw and Elizabeth Mansfield. In 1850 he appears in the OH census for Wyandot Co.,Richland Twp pg 447 under Elizabeth Mansfield (Israel left OH in 1849 never to marry Elizabeth) as "Alison G. Male age 1. He then appears in "The Wyandot Union, March 20, 1884 Marriage Licenses- 1870 entry 15- January 1870 Allison G. Straw and Huldah Clark" Also appears in the 1870 OH census Wyandot Co Richland Twp 6 June 1870 page 794 as "Straw, Allison; age 21;male;white; laborer, under him Huldah; age 18; female; white." this is consistent with a birth year of 1849. On his death certificate wife is listed as Huldah Straw. On Huldah's death certificate it is listed " husband Allison G. Straw"
Israel fathered 2 children out of wedlock from 1839-1849; one female (Amelia Straw who married a Hagerman) and one male. It is said that Israel left OH in 1849 due to a family dispute, never to return.

Alison George Straw b. 30 Jan 1849 to Israel Straw and Elizabeth Mansfield. Married Huldah Clark 15 Jan 1870; d. 10 Dec 1919. It is unknown if, when or how Alison was legitimized as he was born of an adulterous affair between Elizabeth (said to be a Wyandot Indian) and Israel prior to Israel removing to Broadhead, WI.

Israel died on 15 Feb 1879 in Brodhead, Green, WI. Buried in Mt Hope Cemetery in Spring Grove, WI.

Jane, I would like to re-introduce myself. I am Joan Tipka Fisher. I used to be Joan Tipka Plummer but divorced and married again. My sister Cathy T. Bernstein and I are once again jumping into genealogy after a decade of a break. Cathy has debunked the story that Allison Straw was son of an Indian through the DNA. There is NO Native American per her DNA results. So we are now once again jumping into the mystery of Elizabeth Mansfield Mother of Allison Straw. This is my new Email. Feel free to contact me anytime time. < jonif0623@gmail.com >
