bullet  General Notes:

e-mail of Barb Clarine Aug 2000 -per B. Clarine - "I have a book in my posession called "A Corner In Ancestors:Odell Family." It had belonged to my grandmother Eleanor Robinson Weddel. In this book the lineage of the Robinsons are listed from Jacob Robinson in Wales and shows descendancy 6 generations. My grandmother and her sister are the last ones mentioned as children. A few pages later it shows the following:
GRANT
Susan Coffin of England married a man by the name of STRAW. Betsey Straw her daughter, married Silas GRANT. She had the following brothers and sisters: David, Simeon, Valentine, Sally, Polly and Susan. Sally married Robert Parcher, Waterbury, Vermont. Polly and Susan married two brothers, Israel and Peter Smith, Waterborough, Maine, five miles from Alfred County seat. Betsey STRAW, born May 20th 1784, married Silas Grant of Lyman, Maine; moved to Ripley, Maine. Children: Mary 1803; Orin 1804; Hiram 1805; Susan 6 Sept 1807, married Cyrus Spaulding (my great great great grandfather); Wealthy born 11 July 1809, married William Bryde/Bowdoin; Lydia born 10 May 1811, married Bradbury Lovell, Cambridge, Maine; John born 15 Jan 1813; Royal born 22 Dec 1814; Esther 1816; Samuel born 9 May 1818; Jacob born 4 April 1820; Lizza born July 1822, married John Rogers, Springfield, MA and Melissa born July 1824.
Alexander Grant came from Scotland and had two brothers, Daniel and Foss. Alexander's children were James, Silas of Lyman, Maine, Hipseyboth (married a Goodwin) and Daniel."

Genealogy of Ellen Straw Thompson of 1897; IGI files; census records; research of Barbara Jordon Straw of OK.

research of Dale Straw

Per Doris Anastasion he first married Sarah Smith in Maine. New England Geneological Register shows David Straw and Sarah Smith filed intentions to marry on 24 Aug 1793 and were married by Andrew Burley, ESQ on 3 Oct of that year. They were both listed as residents of Waterborough, ME. She was the d/o Capt John Smith who may have been a neighbor of the Straws. Sarah must have died young in Maine. David was "Deacon David Straw" a Methodist minister. He served in Waterbury, VT but the church records burned there after he left to relocate to OHIO in 1831.

census 1790 Maine= no listing for David as HOH; probably living with parents as he did not marry until 1793 to Sarah Smith

census 1800 Waterbury, VT 1 male b 1790-1800 = Israel 1 male b 1790-1800 = Samuel Cady 1 male b. 1784 -1790 = (this could be a younger brother - Simon, Valentine JR or Jonathan?) 1 male b 1755 -1774 = David b. 1768 1 female b. 1755-1774 = Mary Cady b. 1771

1810 Waterbury, Caledonia County, VT David Straw HOH 2 males 1800-1810 [David and Joel] 2 males 1795 -1800 [Israel and Samuel] 1 male 1766-1784 Deacon David 2 females 1800-1810 [Mary and Sally] 1 female 1785-1794 1 female 1766-1784 [Mary Cady]

1820 Waterbury, Washington county, Vermont David Straw HOH 3 males 1810-1820 [Lewis, Jason and Joel; Daniel probably not a son?] 2 males 1794-1804 [Samuel and David with Israel now married?] 1 male bef 1775 [David - HOH] 1 female 1810-1820 [Elizabeth] 1 female 1804-1810 [Sally/Sarah - perhaps married 17 Jan after taking of Jan 1st census?] 1 female 1794-1804 [Mary/Polly who married in 1829] 1 female 1775-1794 [Mary Cady]

1830 Waterbury, Washington County, VT David Straw HOH 1 male 1825-1830 [Lewis; son of Polly and Moses] 2 males 1810-1815 [Joel, Jason and Lewis] 3 males 1800-1810 [David, Moses Ricker and ____] 1 male 1770-1780 [Deacon David HOH] 1 female 1815-1820 [Elizabeth] 1 female 1800-1810 [Polly now married 1829 to Moses Ricker] 1 female 1770-1780 [Mary Cady] Israel married 1820 and gone from household; living in Ohio Samuel Cady m. 1825 in OH and gone from VT Sally/Sarah m 1820 and gone from household My reasoning for Polly and husband Moses is that they too went to Wyandot, OH with Deacon David and Mary Cady as well as sons David, Joel, Jason and Lewis. Sons Israel and Samuel Cady preceded them. David appears on census for Waterbury 1810, 1820 and 1830 after which he removed to OH (1831)

In 1840 David may be in the HH of one of his children as there is no listing of him as HOH. He is possibly in the household of Daniel Straw in Pitt, Crawford, OH as the male 70-80 [born between 1760 and 1770] the female born 1770-1780 fits the profile of Mary (Cady) Straw born 1771. I am unable to find the possibility of him living elsewhere in 1840.
The household is as follows:
1840 census Pitt, Crawford County, OH
Daniel Straw (HOH)
1 male 10-15 1825-1830
1 male 30-40 1800-1810 (Daniel)
1 male 70-80 (fits the description of Dea David Straw; he not found as HOH in 1840 census)
1 female under 5 1835-1840
1 female 60-70 [fits the description of Mary (Cady) Straw]
Could Daniel be his son David now widowed with young children and the reason why parents/grandparents would be with him? David did not marry Rebecca Williams until 1848 and in 1850 they were living in Pitt, OH. He could have married sometime between 1825 and 1840 with children born during those years.

Research of Gregg Beitel from his aunt who was a grand daughter of Sallie Mae Straw, (Deacon David's grand daughter from his son Samuel Cady Straw): Deacon David and his son Samuel are buried in Bowsherville Cem which is located on the Killdeer Plains wildlife refuge and special permission has to be granted to visit the cemetery now.The Cemetery is in very bad condition with broken stones and some of them sunken below the ground. Wild animals have burrowed throughout the cemetery and it is a breeding ground for Rattlers. [headstone photo on www.findagrave.com]
