Civil War Pension Index - Micajah (Malachi) Straw; widow Elizabeth

Lincoln Journal Star (Lincoln, Nebraska)13 May 1983, FriPage 4
"...The inscription on my great-grandmother's tomb at Essex, Iowa reads "Elizabeth Hooker Straw wife of M. [Malachi] Straw, May 1829 , September 21, 1896. I don't know jsut how she and General Hooker were related. I only know they were kina dna cousin has the Hooker family history.
From all acounts Elizabeth was a bit of a martinet. Perhaps Fighting Joe had some of that quality too. an uncle told me that as a samll boy he was afraid of his grandmother. I wasn't born til after her death but I remember her husband Malachi very well. He was a great practical joker with a salty sense of humor and used to tease us children unmercifully.
As you know General Hooker's army had many camp followers known as Hooker's Girls. This was later shortened to hookers. My sister and I like to tell people our great grandmother was a Hooker......." Florence Griffin of Lincoln
