"The middle brother, Horace, married sixteen-year-old Jennie McMeen in Springfield in 1877. Their only daughter, Mary Madge, was born the following year. Horace remained in Springfield and worked as a brakeman for the railroad. Jennie died in 1893, leaving Horace to care for Madge who was only fifteen years old. Madge lived with her father until 1906 when she married Lee O Paddock. Lee's brother, Reverend E.S. Paddock, performed the wedding. Sometime later the couple moved to El Paso, Texas, not far southeast of the Mogollon Mountains of New Mexico where Madge's Uncle Nat lived.
(George Straw died March 16, 1928.) And in a strange coincidence, Nat's brother Horace died four days later. Horace had been admitted to the Alms House two years earlier on May 22, 1926. He was judged insane by the Probate Court and Martha Bowman, a social worker, was named as his guardian. (Greene County, Missouri, probate file #9525). Just as his wife, Jennie, had died very young (she was just thirty-six years of age) , Horace's daughter Madge had also died well before her time. Madge died in 1921 in El Paso, TX, of vascular heart disease. She was only forty years old. Madge was taken back to Springfield for burial in the Maple Park Cemetery.
Horace's obituary in THE SPRINGFILED LEADER reads:
Horace Straw, 75, retired veteran of the Frisco, died this morning at his home on Route 11, Springfield, following a lingering illness. He is survived by a brother Ned (Nat) Straw of Beaverhead, NM. Another brother, George Straw, died last week. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but burial will be in Maple Park Cemetery under the direction of Klinger Funeral Home. Mr. Straw was a brakeman on the Frisco for many years. He had resided in this county practically all his life. (The Springfield Leader 22 March 1928: 8)
Even though Horace had died in the Alms House, Greene County probate records show that after his death, there were stocks and land that went to Nat.

The Frisco Employes' Magazine, May 1928
Springfield, Missouri
Horace Straw, pensioned passenger brakeman, died at the Greene County Hospital, Springfield, March 22. He was born May 18, 1854 at Stansted Plain, Quebec, Canada and entered the service as a trained baggageman on the old Kansas Division in March 1887, serving later as freight brakeman up to the date of his retirement, Sept 30, 1921, which was due to physical disability. Mr Straw was not married. His pension allowance was $22.40 a month and the total paid him was $1,724.80.
