James A. "Jim" Straw passed away at his home in Billings on Thursday 24 November 2005 after a long bout with cancer.
...born 13 May 1925 in a little Homestead shack on the Little Porcupine Creek near Forsyth...fifth of eleven children born to Orrel N. Straw and Nellie Fay Smith Straw. Weather conditions were not kind during the 1920s and 1930s and the family was forced to give up the Homestead in 1930 and move to Billings area in search of work and a living...Jim began his formal education in the old Roosevelt School in Billings and later attended the Pine Hills School in Lockwood....attended high school at Billings Senior High. ...joined the Navy in 1943 spending 3 years in the Pacific during World War II. He married on returning to Helen M. Becker on 3 Oct 1949 at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings. They had 7 children.
Jim was appointed to Billings Fire Dept in 1948 serving for 30 years and retiring in 1978. He was then elected Yellowstone County Commissioner and served 6 years.
He coached Little League and Pony/Colt and was President of Optomist International. He did volunteer work through his church.
Survived by wife of 56 years and 6 children: Diana, Randy, Ken, Peggy, Susan and Jeff; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. also sisters June, Jean, Winnie and brother Wilbur. Preceded in death by parents; daughter Kathleen and sisters Sally, Dorothy, Margaret, Helen and Jeanette and a brother Paul Norman Straw.
Services were held at Little Flower Catholic Church with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
